Vanderbilt Transfer Center Jalen Washington Commits to Tennessee After NCAA Injunction

KNOXVILLE – After being granted an injunction against the NCAA to play the 2026‑27 college basketball season and securing a fifth year of eligibility, Vanderbilt transfer center Jalen Washington has committed to Tennessee, capping off a tremendous offseason for Rick Barnes and Co. 

Washington, who spent three seasons at North Carolina and one at Vanderbilt in 2025‑26, received a court order in Ohio granting him eligibility for the upcoming season. The ruling emphasized the irreparable harm of losing a final year of competition.

The court order states: “Although the value of missed NIL opportunities could potentially be quantified, the lost opportunity to play NCAA Division I basketball for a fifth season results in a loss of opportunity for exposure and building his ‘personal brand.’ NCAA eligibility is necessarily limited in duration. The opportunity to compete as a student-athlete, develop athletically, and pursue compensation through name, image, and likeness activities exists only during a finite period and cannot be recreated once a season has concluded. Plaintiffs have demonstrated that, absent injunctive relief, they will be unable to compete in the upcoming season and enter the NCAA Transfer Portal and pursue opportunities to compete during an additional season, should such opportunities become available. Once those deadlines pass and roster positions are filled, the lost opportunity cannot be restored through a later judgment or adequately compensated by monetary damage.”

Washington played in all 36 games last season for Vanderbilt, starting nine, and averaged a career‑high 8.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game while helping lead the Commodores to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Listed at 6‑foot‑10 and 245 pounds, he shot 56.3% from the field and added 0.9 assists and 0.6 steals in 20.9 minutes per contest.
