The Latest Postseason Projections For Tennessee Baseball
By Cody McClure
The end of college baseball’s regular season is just around the corner.
Tennessee has just two series remaining in SEC play — this weekend vs. Vanderbilt and next weekend at Arkansas.
As things stand currently, the Vols will probably not be hosting a Super Regional unless they are able to win both of those remaining series.
The question now seems to be whether UT will even host a Regional.
The Vols are down to 12th or lower in all of the major polls this week.
In order to host a Regional, a school needs to be a top 16 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
According to this week’s Field of 64 via On3 Sports, the Vols still currently make the cut to host the first weekend of the tournament.
Tennessee is the No. 14 seed based on the projections and would travel to Tallahassee to face 3-seed Florida State in the supers.
“All of a sudden, Tennessee is in serious danger of falling out of the hosting picture, though they hold on in this week’s Field of 64,” On3 wrote. “The Vols have lost three straight series and four of their last five weekends, now at 37-11 overall, 14-10 in the SEC and No. 14 in RPI. If that trend continues in the final two weeks against Vanderbilt and at Arkansas, Tennessee could very well end up on the 2-line. TCU is still in contention to host as well, and could benefit by a team like Tennessee dropping.”
The Horned Frogs, along with Michigan and Columbia, are the teams currently projected in the Knoxville Regional with the Vols.
These latest projections have a whopping 14 SEC teams in the NCAA field.
Texas, Georgia, Arkansas, Auburn, Vanderbilt, and LSU are also projected to host regionals as things stand today.
The tournament field will be announced Monday, May 26th.
