KNOXVILLE – Tennessee utility sophomore Chris Newstrom is expected to enter the transfer portal after two seasons on Rocky Top, as first reported by Ben McKee of 247Sports.
Newstrom broke out as a freshman in 2025, hitting .351 with a 1.117 OPS across 29 games while posting 5 home runs and 19 RBI in just 57 at-bats, making him one of Tennessee’s most impactful newcomers during Tony Vitello’s final season on campus.
His sophomore season told a different story. In 20 games played, Newstrom hit .173 with a .574 OPS, adding 1 home run and 7 RBI in 52 at-bats. The Scottsdale (Ariz.) native also notably did not travel to Starkville for Tennessee’s three game series earlier this spring due to a suspension.
The 6-foot-2, 212 pound utility player becomes the third Volunteer to enter the portal, joining freshman infielder Ethan Moore and junior infielder Ariel Antigua.
