You might have noticed Tennessee’s ranking changed in the middle of the Rutgers game Monday afternoon.
Vol hoops climbed three spots to No. 17 in the latest AP Poll following a dominant 2-0 week.
Tennessee rolled past Rice 91-66 and handled Tennessee State 89-60, extending its strong start to the season.
Maryland transfer point guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie has been the steady hand guiding the Vols so far this season, averaging 16.6 points and 6.0 assists per game.
True freshman Nate Ament has established himself as Tennessee’s leading scorer, putting up 18.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest.
Ament combined for 34 points and 16 rebounds in last week’s two wins.
Redshirt sophomore JP Estrella has been a surprise breakout player in the frontcourt.
The Scarborough, Maine native is averaging 14.7 points and 6.8 rebounds, raising his career-high in scoring in each of Tennessee’s first three games, including a 23-point, 10-rebound performance against North Florida.
The Vols will look to carry that momentum forward as they continue through the Player’s Era Tournament.
