KNOXVILLE – Are the Box Office Vols back?

After Tennessee swept eighth ranked Mississippi State in Starkville over the weekend, the weekly honors are starting to roll in.  Left-hander Cameron Appenzeller has been named SEC Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.

Appenzeller, a native of Chatham (IL), has been the Vols’ most reliable bullpen arm this season, and he showed why Friday night against the Bulldogs. The 6-foot-5 freshman entered in the 5th inning and completely shut down Mississippi State, striking out a career high 8 while allowing just two runs on three hits in Tennessee’s 6-5 win.

Through his freshman campaign, Appenzeller is 5-0 with a 1.69 ERA, the second best mark in the SEC behind Auburn’s Andreas Alvarez. His pitching has given the BaseVols a major boost and Josh Elander and Co. look to continue climbing in the SEC standings.
