Tony Vitello picked up another commitment over the weekend. This time it’s a catcher — Garrett Wright from Bowling Green University.

In his career he has been a .396 hitter, with 14HRs, and 76 RBIs. In his two seasons with the Falcons he was named to the MAC all-defensive team.

Wright has spent some time in the outfield in his career and with the future uncertain with Cannon Peebles and Stone Lawless, Wright could be competing for the starting catcher role next season.

Having a catcher that can hit either way looks likely as Lawless batted .288 this season as a freshman. This would be a big difference for the Vols as the past few catchers for the team have been defensive weapons with less than desirable hitting.

Wright was named the number one overall catcher in the portal after entering the transfer portal with a “do not contact tag.”

This is the seventh player out of the portal to commit to Vitello and his staff.

Previous commitments include multiple pitchers — Brady Frederick, Matt Barr, Clay Edmondson, Mason Estrada, and Bo Rhudy — as well as position players Ty Myatt and now Garrett Wright.

After hosting multiple players last week UT may see a few more players commit this week.
