Vols INF/OF Jay Abernathy to Enter Transfer Portal

KNOXVILLE – Tennessee sophomore INF/OF Jay Abernathy will enter the NCAA transfer portal after two seasons in Knoxville, Mike Wilson of VolQuest reports.

Abernathy delivered a productive freshman campaign in 2025, hitting .279 with a .406 OBP across 45 games while driving in 11 runs in 104 at-bats. The Acworth (Ga.) native also recorded his first-career home run in the Fayetteville Super Regional against No. 3 Arkansas.

His sophomore season dipped slightly. Abernathy appeared in 46 games and hit .236 with a .352 OBP, adding 3 home runs and 16 RBI in 140 at-bats. His strikeout total rose from 21 as a freshman to 37 this season.

Listed at 5 foot 10 and 177 pounds, Abernathy becomes the ninth Volunteer to enter the portal, joining infielders Ethan Moore, Ariel Antigua, and Finley Bates along with utility players Chris Newstrom and Hunter High, right-hander Brayden Krenzel, 1B/LHP Evan Hankins, and C/OF Cash Williams.
