There is growing support among the Big Ten and SEC to expand the College Football Playoff to 16 teams.
The new playoff format could include as follows:
4 Big Ten teams
4 SEC teams
2 ACC teams
2 Big 12 teams
1 group of six team
3 at-large teams
Per Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, these changes were discussed yesterday at an in-person meeting in New York that included the commissioners of the four power conferences.
The Big Ten and SEC control the future format and continue to favor multiple automatic qualifiers for their conferences, Dellenger wrote.
“A decision is expected over the next month or two. The Big Ten and SEC hold their springs meetings later this month, where the SEC is expected to seriously explore a 9-game conference schedule - a move contingent on a CFP format and negotiations with ESPN for more revenue.”
The rest of college football had to bend the knee last year to the pair of big dog conferences, as the Big Ten and SEC reportedly threatened to just go and do their own thing — for lack of a better term — if they didn’t get their way.
