KNOXVILLE – The Volunteer front court is officially in rebuild-mode.
Tennessee redshirt sophomore forward JP Estrella is entering the transfer portal after three seasons in Knoxville, he announced Monday. Estrella appeared in 61 career games for the Volunteers and averaged 6.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest.
“My time as a Vol over the past three years has meant more to me than I can put into words, and I will always cherish the memories and relationships I’ve built here,” Estrella said in his announcement.
The Scarborough (ME) native played a pivotal role in Tennessee’s run to a third‑straight Elite Eight this past season. Estrella opened the NCAA Tournament with 14 points and 10 rebounds against Miami (OH) in the first round, then added 10 points and five boards in the Vols’ win over Virginia to send Tennessee to the Sweet Sixteen.
His departure marks the second frontcourt loss of the offseason, joining fellow big man Cade Phillips in the portal. With both forwards moving on, Rick Barnes and Co. will be ultra-aggressive in rebuilding a depleted frontcourt when the transfer portal officially opens Tuesday.
