Billionaire Oil Booster Strikes Again: Texas Tech Lands No. 1 Recruit In 2027
By Aidan Sidoti
The richest man in college athletics, Cody Campbell, has done it again.
The oil-rich mega booster’s deep pockets have once again done the improbable, convincing another five-star recruit to willingly spend the next few years in Lubbock, Texas.
The Red Raiders secured the highest-ranked prospect in program history, landing class of 2027 No. 1 recruit LaDamion Guyton, per Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett.
Guyton, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound edge rusher out of Savannah, Georgia, chose Texas Tech over SEC stalwarts Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina.
Long considered a second-tier destination, due to being in the middle of nowhere, Texas Tech is now flexing serious muscle in the NIL era with the help of the multi-billionaire.
Campbell, the former Red Raider and Indianapolis Colts o-lineman turned oil tycoon, has poured millions into Texas Tech athletics through the NIL collective ‘Matador Club’.
Star softball pitcher Nijaree Canady, fresh off leading Texas Tech to its first-ever WCWS appearance, secured a seven-figure deal from Campbell, who then landed Lady Vols standout third baseman Taylor Pannell via the portal for an undisclosed amount.
With Guyton joining elite offensive tackle Felix Ojo and four-star wide receiver Chase Campbell, Texas Tech’s 2026 & 2027 classes are shaping up to be ranked much higher than the Red Raiders usually are.
At the bottom.
