Rick Barnes Has A Little Fun With ‘Out Of Shape’ Josh Heupel

By Cody McClure

Tennessee’s coaches are out on tour right now for the Big Orange Caravan.

It’s a great opportunity for Josh Heupel, Rick Barnes, and Kim Caldwell to talk up their programs and engage with fans.

The Caravan is always a fun time, and today it seemed that Barnes decided to have a little fun with Heupel.

Barnes was describing what he was looking for in adding someone into his basketball program.

“We wanted someone we thought could really shoot, someone who knew what it was like to win a national championship, someone who had it in their DNA, just a high level competitor,” he said before being interrupted by Heupel.

“Sounds a lot like me,” Heupel said.

“Well, I was getting ready to say that,” Barnes replied. “But understand this. We pride ourselves most of all on taking guys that are out of shape and getting them in shape. So I literally woke up the other night and called one of my assistants and said, ‘does Josh have any more eligibility?’ … because he tells everybody he’s the best shooter on campus.”

The crowd erupted with laughter, and Barnes jokingly offered to let Heupel into his strength and conditioning program to help get him where he needs to be.

Heupel’s response, simply:

“Make sure we’ve got a medical team onsite.”
