Can You Guess What President Trump Wants To Call Washington’s NFL Team?
By Cody McClure
Do you struggle with change? Is it difficult for you to accept new things happening?
Will the Washington Commanders always be the Washington Redskins in your heart?
I like change when it comes to some things.
For instance — I used to drink black coffee like a real American.
But then I liked when Starbucks introduced the Venti Brown Sugar Oatmilk Iced Shaken Espresso. It is so tasty!
I used to eat at Subway because when I was a boy Ma always got me a cold cut combo and I liked it.
But then I had Jersey Mike’s for the first time and realized how much better a chain sandwich could be.
I used to go to a store to rent VHS tapes. But now I stream movies through an app.
You see, change isn’t always bad.
But I’ve never liked change in the NFL.
The NFL is one entity that should remain as is, in my opinion. It is a near perfect product.
Rule changes always upset me.
They never should have messed with the kickoff. They never should have been so hard on penalizing defensive backs. They’ve made the game a breeze for all these diva wide receivers.
I miss the headhunting days. I miss guys like Ed Reed who could potentially paralyze you right there on the gridiron.
Like a severe hit from one of those guys in the 2000s could actually kill you. That was football, man.
You could die on the field.
I digress.
Another thing that, IMO, should have never changed is the name of the Washington professional football team.
Although I did like that brief period of time when they were just “the football team.” That was fun.
The Redskins used to be an institution. Cowboys vs. Redskins. What a rivalry. Cowboys vs. Commanders just doesn’t have the same ring.
And I know the people in charge thought they were doing the right thing or whatever. Thought they had to do it for the sake of public perception. Maybe they were right, maybe they weren’t.
Who am I to know what’s right? I am merely one honky in East Tennessee. I don’t know the percentage of Native Americans who liked it or didn’t like it.
I only know how it made me feel. And it made me feel like Washington had turned into an XFL team. It just didn’t feel right.
Now President Donald Trump agrees with me.
He said today that if he was Washington he would go back to the Redskins name.
Trump added that he never would have changed it in the first place.
This could be viewed as a controversial take from the president.
But I for one am hoping it picks up steam. I’m hoping the Redskins come back. Maybe I’m selfish in that hope. Maybe it’s not right.
Of course, I’ll be watching Jayden Daniels sling the rock either way.
The most like scenario here is that the ship has long sailed and anyone holding out for nostalgia will simply just have to get used to Washington being called the Commanders.
That’s most likely the case. Most of us are already there.
But perhaps a change is not out of the question after the president’s recent comments. We’ll see if this has any impact.
