Tennessee baseball LHP/OF standout Blaine Brown is reportedly involved in an NIL‑related legal dispute with the South Main Collective, the group that supports Rice University, where Brown played his freshman season in 2025. The news was first reported by Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball.
According to the report, the legal matter will not impact Brown’s eligibility at Tennessee, and he remains fully available for the Vols as the season continues.
Brown, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound two-way star for the Volunteers, has been one of Tennessee’s most productive players early. Through 12 games, the Houston (TX) native is hitting .313, tied for the team lead with four home runs, and leading the Vols with 13 RBI.
Brown’s situation stems from an NIL agreement he signed with the South Main Collective in February of his freshman year, the D1Baseball report reads, a deal that stretched through the 2027 season. The contract included $20,000 guaranteed during his first year at Rice, with the chance to earn up to $256,000 over the following two seasons. If he stayed at Rice through graduation and hit additional incentives, the total value could have reached $345,000.
Brown entered the transfer portal in June of 2025 and committed to Tennessee shortly after, ending his time with the Owls after one season. According to the report, Brown has expressed a willingness to repay the money he received during his freshman year, but early indications are that the South Main Collective is not interested in settling on those terms. That leaves the dispute unresolved with the arbitration process still ongoing.
For Tennessee, the matter remains strictly between Brown and the collective.
Again, the Vols expect no impact on his availability.
